The platform is designed to explore the intricate relationships between power outages in Seattle and various equity factors related to the environment, socio-economics, and public health. This interactive map offers several primary features:
Data for this hub comes from the Seattle Open Data Portal, Justice 40, and the Seattle Equity Map, and it's built using the open-source MapLibre framework. The project is a collaboration between Seattle City Light, the University of Washington's Department of Geography, and Locaphilia LLC. Accessible via PC, Mac, or Tablet (not smartphone), the team welcomes contributions, suggestions, and questions to improve the platform's effectiveness.
Acknowledging the project's location, it is noted that the Seattle City Light Service Area is situated on the lands and waters of the Coastal Salish peoples, specifically the Suquamish, Tulalip, and Muckleshoot nations. This acknowledgment reflects a commitment to contemplating the historical legacies of the land and striving for greater recognition and confrontation of these histories.
